Harmful Effects of Junk Food

What is Junk Food ?

Junk food is defined as food with little nutritional value (Fiber, Vitamins and Minerals) but high fats, salt, sugar, and calorie content. People who eat junk food tend to overeat because junk food is high in calories but low in satiation.

Some example of junk food:

        • Cakes and biscuit

        • Chocolate and sweets

        • Fast foods (such as burger, French fries)

        • Processed meat (such as bacon)

        • Snacks (such as potato chips)

        • Sugary drinks (such as soft drinks)

These foods are incredibly tasty and tempting, but excessive consumption of junk food can be harmful to one’s health.

Causes Obesity

Obesity is the common effect of junk food as they are high in calories, fats, salt and sugar, which all lead to weight gain. Obesity may increase risk of having other diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and joint pain.

As a result, it is recommended to limit junk food consumption.

Harmful Effects of Junk Food

Worsen Appetite and Digestions

Excessive consumption of junk food, such as fast food and processed foods, can make it difficult for the brain to process and function. Excess sugar consumption may induce a spike in blood sugar levels, causing the brain to crave more food and lead to overeating.

As a result, excessive junk food might be difficult for the body to digest.

Tips for Healthy Food Choices

Depression

Junk foods are high in sugar and fats, which can trigger chemical reactions in the brain that impair how it works. When you eat too much junk food, your body loses essential nutrients and amino acids tryptophan

As a result, lack of these nutrients eventually leads to the brain’s inability to cope with stress, leaving you depressed. So, minimize your junk food consumption because it is harmful to your body.

Loss of Learning and Memory Problems

Excessive junk food consumption has been linked to poor cognitive test results, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Our brains have a region called the hippocampus that is crucial for learning and remembering.

As a result, eating too much high-fat, high-sugar meals might cause inflammation in the hippocampus.
